(Free Software #1) Drawing Resouce #8

Hello everyone!,
Are you interested in the digital art world? Do you want to try out digital drawing/painting? If you do, great! However, are you not sure if you want to spend all the money to find out whether or not you like it? Fortunately, there are alternatives to the expensive digital art programs out there, and they're free!
The first free software I would like to mention in this post is GIMP version 2.8. Personally, I view the program as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop, with features similar enough where you can do and create a variety of photo editing effects, digital painting, etc. Not only is this free, but also you are allowed to save your project and export your project to formats which may be opened in other programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Corel Painter, Corel Draw X7, Corel Paint X7, Krita 2.9, and Sketchbook Pro 7, just to name a few. You have a lot of tools available from the start, and if you know how to, you can add brushes, plug-ins, etc. to GIMP 2.8. If you're not sure if you would like Adobe Photoshop (and you cannot afford their software/creative cloud services), GIMP is an excellent introduction! Of course, you can stick with GIMP 2.8, and never have to use Adobe Photoshop. GIMP 2.8 is available on Windows, Macs, or Linux (e.g., Ubuntu, Linux Mint, etc.)!
The next free software I would like to discuss is Krita 2.9, a digital painting program. I would view this program as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Corel Painter 2015 (or older). This program has numerous options, ranging from canvas/paper texture and color choice to a great selection of default paint brushes, air brushes, pen, pencil, erasers, and pastels. And just like GIMP 2.8, you can also install brushes to Krita 2.9; however, the brush formats are different compared to Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator's file format (a link regarding this will be included below this post!). Saving your work on Krita 2.9 is great, especially if your project is not complete. Exporting from Krita 2.9 allows you to open your projects in most major/commercial digital art programs, including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Corel Painter 2015, etc. Krita 2.9 is available on Windows and Linux; there is an "experimental version" for Mac users.
The final free software for this blog entry would be MyPaint 1.0/1.1. This digital painting program could be compared to Made with Mischief 2.0.7 and Corel Painter 2015, since this has unlimited canvas size (similar to Mischief) and has the ability to get great painting effects (comparable to Corel Painter). What is nice about this program is that you don't have to worry about all its features; one could immediately draw/paint without worrying about color channels or color levels (as you might in Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator). You can save your work and come back to it later, and also export to open in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator, etc. This is not only a great program to use for sketching out ideas, but also to create wonderful digital artwork! MyPaint 1.0/1.1 is available on Windows, Linux, and Mac.
In a later blog installment, I will mention additional free digital art programs. I think GIMP, Krita, and MyPaint are excellent programs to start out with if you are new to the digital painting world/on a budget. If you have any questions, please feel to leave a comment below, or you can e-mail me. I hope this was helpful! Enjoy!:
