Drawing Resource#11?!

Hello everyone,
Did you make a mistake in your drawing, and you want to correct that mistake? You look at your drawing inventory tools, and you find more than one eraser; which one do you use? Are you confused regarding the different types of erasers available? Fortunately, all the questions can be answered, because each eraser has its particular use.
One type of eraser you may come across during your drawing adventures (or if you're at the store and you're browsing the drawing accessories) is the gum eraser. These thick cubed or rectangular min-blocks may be used to erase any smudging you have (e.g., graphite pencil lines smudged in a spot you do not want touched by graphite). If you notice your gum eraser falling apart, no worries, that normal. Fortunately, these erasers are not expensive, so stock up if you like this eraser!
The next eraser you might have seen (or have, but it's not being used) is the kneaded eraser. This type of eraser is popular because of its longevity and flexibility. Artists will use the kneaded eraser to shape the eraser to their desired size (e.g., tiny tip to create highlights on the subject). Additionally, as stated before, this eraser will last a long time because if the eraser is turning black (which is normal, especially if you're using the the kneaded eraser to remove graphite pencil marks/smears and/or charcoal marks), you can stretch the eraser, and fold it into itself; folding it into itself creates a "new" clean section, without worrying about smearing old graphite or charcoal pieces. I personally high recommend purchasing this inexpensive eraser, especially if you're on a small budget.
If you're working with ink, and you made a mistake with your illustration, I would recommend purchasing a vinyl eraser. Also known as the "plastic eraser," this eraser is the hardest eraser available for artists/illustrators, meaning if you use this on your paper hard enough, you can damage the surface of the paper (be careful!). The trade off is that this eraser alleviate a lot of mediums on the surface, including ink, graphite, charcoal, or pen, just to name a few. This inexpensive eraser is good to have around as an emergency eraser (if all else fails).
Even the familiar pink eraser has its use. You're most likely familiar with the pink eraser from your grade school/elementary school days (or high school) when your pencil lost its eraser tip (or if the eraser tip stained your paper!). Similar to the gum eraser, this eraser is meant to be used to remove graphite markings on the surface of your paper. Its shape may give you more precision compared to the gum eraser. However, similar to the vinyl eraser, if you press down hard enough of the paper, you may damage the surface of the paper! Be careful when you erase. This eraser can be found at almost all stores that sells office/school supplies.
If you're using soft pastels, and you're looking for an eraser that will remove some of the color, then I would recommend using a tri tip eraser. Also great to use to remove graphite and charcoal marks, this eraser is soft enough where it will not damage the surface of the paper when applied with some pressure (I still wouldn't press hard on the paper's surface!). This eraser has three (or tri) tips, giving you more flexibility and a better hold with your hand to grip with. As one side shrinks (or falls of, or flattens), simply flip to another side, and continue to use! Or you can assign a side for each medium! This inexpensive eraser is recommended especially if you're working with soft pastels.
If you want similar precision to that of a sharpened pencil, then I would recommend using the pencil eraser (my personal favorite!). This soft tip gives you the precision to go in and correct any (small) mistakes (or create highlights); however, if you're looking to erase a large area/section, I would recommend using the appropriate erasers listed above. If you tip is shrinking/becoming dull, simply take a pencil sharpener, and sharpen the tip! The eraser will reshape into a tip similar to that of a pencil! Pencil erasers usually comes in a pack of two, and at the price (generally under $10), this eraser set should last you a while!
The final eraser (and the most expensive from the list) is the electric eraser. Averaging around $40, this electric eraser will quickly correct your graphite, charcoal, or even oil pastel mistakes. This eraser should be used for precise erasing, or if you want to be quick with erasing sections of your art work. Additionally, you can use this electric eraser to create highlights in your art work, especially if you're using oil pastels. The electric eraser doesn't require pressing down hard on the paper surface, allowing you to conserve your eraser nibs longer. Also, you can use the electric eraser to remove color on non-papered surface (e.g., wood surfaces). When your eraser nib is low, you can purchase eraser nibs for about $5.
You can't go wrong with using an eraser. Everyone makes mistakes! What do you do with a mistake? Erase it! Try out these erasers, and see what works best for you! If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail me, or leave a comment below. I hope this entry was helpful! Enjoy!:
